Hi all-
My host business is not letting us on site for the fall semester. Are there any programs out there in the same boat and if you are what are you doing for your 1st and possibly 2nd internship? I am in the process of developing a mock online store but would love to hear other ideas.

Hi Amy! There are new resources in the toolkit that are geared toward programs that need to operate remotely for a period of time. Head to the Toolkit, then Curriculum, then Skill Building Activities for Home. This list will grow over time! Some businesses that have employees that are working remotely are also offering remote internships opportunities. Many programs that are operating remotely for an internship are creating a schedule that is similar to the typical Project SEARCH schedule with curriculum time in the morning, remote internships in the home (with a rotating schedule of staff teaching skills individually to them, and then checking in on the student as they would in an internship to monitor productivity and quality measures and to layer on skills as the student is ready), and then another all class meeting at the end of the day for group work and wrap up. There are many apps that can assist with remote skills training, allowing you to create task lists with photos/text/audio and set alerts, etc. that you may want to check out (for example: CanPlan, Reminders, MeMinder, Cognitopia). There are also apps that you can use for time clocks for students to clock in and out. There are aps for visual timers for those that benefit from this. VocFit is able to be completed virtually and is awesome for measuring skills gain over time, whether in person or virtual! Hope this is helpful smile

My program is only going partially to the host site as it is on lock down and so many of the tasks we have done are not needed. (Sanitizing and stocking common areas, waiting rooms, etc.) So we are creating internships at our school site. It is going not the ideal, but the best we can do at this time. We will reassess our host site at the end of 1st rotation and take more interns there if possible.
Being flexible and creative is the name of the game this year.

We are also going to be away from our host site for the first marking period. We are going to be using virtual job shadow.

We are not at our host site business either. Right now, we are implementing internships within the school system as much as possible. So far, we have interns working in the school system's warehouse and print shop twice a week for a few hours and with the van delivery every day. We are also assisting the Maintenance department with special projects that involve cleaning and moving since our central office locations are in the process of renovating. We are hoping to begin internships with the Food Services department soon as well. In addition, we are communicating with our host business to think creatively to provide projects that our interns can work on offsite. For example, we just completed a project with the Health Services dept at our host business to create goodie bags for the flu clinic that they are starting soon. We will also begin a scanning project for another department this week. We are trying to engage with our host business as much as possible even though we are not able to be on site at this time.
