What does your site do for summer engagement activities with interns and their families?

Our summer activities include keeping in touch with our new incoming interns. We have ZOOM Sessions where we take opportunity to get to know the intern and vise versa. In addition we have our PCI Job coach doing the exploration interviews. I also use this time to talk up the upcoming work sites and feel out our interns for any possible anxieties. We talk about the recent stressors with the COVID - 19 and work on keeping them excited and motivated for the new year.

Last year, our host site rented an ice cream truck, and we had an ice cream social! It was a great way to get to know the interns and their families.

Typically I would have a gathering each month in the summer. One a lunch and learn with lunch hosted at our site, and some information topic. This helps me get to know the interns and gives them an opportunity to be onsite and helps to decrease anxiety about the location. The second meeting would be a lunch outing and a shift at some community service, like a food bank. This gives me an opportunity to see the new interns working in an unfamiliar environment. It does great for team building.
However, this year has been a little challenging. I have had one meeting, lunch in the park and did not have good attendance. So like everything else I have to try something different to get them engaged and interested.

So, I am a job coach for a program called Summer Earn and Learn (SEAL). The program is a 12-week work-based learning program. The clients range from ages 16-18. A majority of our interns are encouraged to participate in this program. It gives me an insight to how they handle everyday issues, how they work with a team, redirection etc. It also gives me and the interns a chance to develop a relationship, so they feel more comfortable when entering PS.

We also volunteer at the food bank. Last year I set up a shopping trip with the female interns to get to know them and asses their counting, problem solving skills etc. This was a lot of fun and makes them feel comfortable.

ZOOM sessions are helpful but I believe hands on activities work best.
