I have a parent who is trying to put some very strict parameters around employment for her child. Every opportunity presented to her and her son are met with "I don't want him to work there, I don't like the people that work there, or I don't want him to work in that area." Her child is very skilled and is trying to express his wants and need, but it's not being heard. Any advice?

I had a dad that once said he cant start until I talk to the manager.
We simply asked if his dad did this for him? Then followed with "Dignity of Risk" discussion. We have to allow them to fail or they might just succeed and go beyond.

I had to have a hard heart to heart conversation with a mom doing the same thing. Prior to our conversation, I had a talk with the intern and asked what HE wanted. I asked him to state why he preferred the job, preferred the setting, preferred the tasks and asked if he was comfortable with me having a discussion privately with mom. Then I called mom, explained the conflict her son was feeling, with wanting to work at a particular place and not wanting to disappoint her. I explained all of the points her son brought up and asked for her to consider all of his points. I told her this was weighing heavily upon her son and asked if the three of us could set up a zoom meeting to discuss further. We set up a meeting and she was very receptive, listened and discussed her concerns. In the end the mom did concede that her son had very valid points and the intern accepted the job HE wanted.
