I am wondering if any sites have interns participate in the Security Department and if so, what kind of skills could be developed that would be transferrable to the jobs/careers in other areas of the community? I have an intern this year that has a great interest in protective service - he has tried to apply to different branches of the military but has been turned down due to being diagnosed with Autism. In working with him and talking with his family, we are looking into ways to help him obtain employment in a related field such as the police department. Our site is in a hospital and I did find an intern task list that I think our he could benefit from if we are able to get a Security department site up and going, I am just wondering if there are specific skills he could learn from that department that would also be beneficial in any other job. Thanks!

We currently don't have any students in security but have also been trying to carve something out to start an internship there. Some of the tasks that we have been thinking about are: assisting the badging office (they get crazy busy on certain days of the week with new hires), Parking assistant (either assisting cars where to park when the lots start getting full and assisting Security Guard checking parking passes upon entry), Checking in vendors (they currently just have a laptop where they have to "sign-in"), rounding security equipment for proper functions (radios, call in stations, automatic doors)
That's what i have so far! Hope it at least is a start!

Our site currently has an internship in our host business' Security Department, and it is by the most sought after internship by our interns!
In this department, the intern completes checkpoint tours of the Office, DC, and perimeter using the Guard Tech app and a two way radio to relay information back to the Guard Shack. At the Guard Shack, the intern opens the security gate for trucks, greets employees and visitors, inputs information in the Daily Activity Report, and logs coworkers in/out using Express Team.
Some of the skills gained by our interns include: visual alertness, attention to detail, navigational skills (there are over 50 checkpoints when all three tours are combined), interpersonal skills (dealing with office and DC personnel, truck drivers, delivery drivers, applicants, etc.), data entry, use of technology (guard tech app, two way radio, laptop), reading a thermometer (interns must call in the riser temperature to the guard shack while on the DC tour), problem solving (when their security vest is on, they get asked lots of questions!), flexibility with schedule and coworkers; honestly with the right team supporting your interns there are so many skills to gain in this department, I can't possibly list them all! It is truly worth looking into!

We have a supportive security staff at St Francis in Wichita. We found that one task that is essential to their job is reviewing video to support various claims. These claims include theft, elopement, accidents, and other issues that are supported by video surveillance. When an incident occurs within a several-hour period it takes an immense number of man hours to review available video for snippets of evidence. We were given access to the video feed and provided "cases" to investigate. When we found evidence we then created a video file of the specific incident and delivered it to the security department. This job was developed for one of our wheelchair users who had a sharp eye and an ability to sit for hours reviewing video. We do not currently have an intern for this, but it is still available for the right person. We also helped develop a smoother Lost and Found experience for patients as this area was neglected with no one taking ownership. However, once we created the system the support requirements were not enough to support an intern.

We have a former intern who is working Security at the gate here at Dow. He has a very very supportive group of co-workers.
