Hello! We have an intern in the Patient Transport Department and the department is feeling overwhelmed with having the intern by their side all the time. Does any other PS sites have Patient Transport as an internship? What are some tasks your interns do that do not require them to be with the mentor the whole time?

We (UNM Hospitals, Albuquerque) stopped using that department for that exact reason. We tried to incorporate as much cleaning equipment and checking functionality and upkeep of wheelchairs and such as possible. However, it was always a struggle like you said of not being able to do the main task independently so we have been hesitant to reach out to that department again.

We have an internship in the Lift & Transport Department. We work with a coworker, but we also do some things independently. We do the following duties:

  • Transport and move patients in beds, gurneys, or wheelchairs around the hospital
  • Maneuver medical equipment such as I.V. poles, oxygen tanks, etc.
  • Ensure defibrillator and important medical supplies are taken on each transport call
  • Provide customer service to patients and their families
  • Answer dispatch calls
  • Assign and send employees out for patient transports
  • Assist coworkers with lifting and transferring patients from wheelchair to bed, bed to wheelchair, or wheelchair to wheelchair
  • Assist coworker with operating the lift machines
  • Retrieve and sanitize wheelchairs, beds, gurneys, and other transport equipment that has been left around the hospital.

In Patient Transport, our mentors fade over the course of the rotation. Our interns pick up more and more pieces of the job as the rotation goes on. They call dispatch, nurses, nurse techs, etc. They clean the stretcher and put clean linen on them. They sign in / sign out patient on the floor. Our mentors are good about stepping back. They department typically picks someone that hasn't trained new staff and our intern is the guinea pig.
We also work with surgery transporters. They take patients from rooms to surgery intake or from recovery room back to their room. In their downtime, they fill ice packs, blanket warmers, stock patient bays.
We also started with our Children's Emergency department patient transport. There our intern cleans patient rooms upon discharge. The intern can walk out families to where valet get their cars. Once discharged, requirements are different, so it's like they are showing anybody around. Some of the mentors let the intern walk out the families independently.
