Selection Day Tasks

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for different tasks that we could do for our selection activities. We are at a large hospital in West Michigan. Three areas where there are high needs for employment and where we've had a number of our graduates work are; Environmental Services, Nutrition Services, and Patient Transport.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Patient Transport Task Ideas

In Patient Transport, our mentors fade over the course of the rotation. Our interns pick up more and more pieces of the job as the rotation goes on. They call dispatch, nurses, nurse techs, etc. They clean the stretcher and put clean linen on them. They sign in / sign out patient on the floor. Our mentors are good about stepping back. They department typically picks someone that hasn't trained new staff and our intern is the guinea pig. We also work with surgery transporters. They take patients from rooms to surgery intake or from recovery room back to their room. In their downtime, they fill ice packs, blanket warmers, stock patient bays. We also started with our Children's Emergency department patient transport. There our intern cleans patient rooms upon discharge. The intern can walk out families to where valet get their cars. Once discharged, requirements are different, so it's like they are showing anybody around. Some of the mentors let the intern walk out the families independently. |

Employment during COVID-19

Yes! We've had four hired at our hospital. 1 was in Nutrition Services and 3 in Environmental Services. The three in ES, my business liaison had me call interns asking who was interested in NS or ES and recruiters were calling them without applying yet. They were sent links to apply. I offered families support and touched base with them through hiring process. I am trying to check in with them and their managers to make sure they are off to a good start. |

Hospital Site Internships?

I work at a hospital site in Michigan. This school year, our host business has moved us to working in their warehouse. Our interns have gotten to do a variety of things like picking items using handheld scanners, stocking items in the warehouse, putting stickers on patient charge items, and working on folding / packaging PPE gowns, masks, safety glasses, making COVID 19 test kits. We are also going to be working with the mailroom soon too. We are meeting soon with our business liaison to talk about the potential to return to the hospital. I am aware from the different state meetings, flyers sent out and social media that some hospital sites are at their hospital. What areas are they working in? What guidelines are they working from? I'd be ok with working away from patients, I just want more opportunities for our interns. I think there is enough potential to work together so that interns and PS staff can work at the hospital safely. Our interns also were able to get their COVID vaccines being volunteers. Our Project Search staff is going to all be vaccinated too soon. |

Hospital Requires Covid-19 Vaccine

Our hospital site is requiring COVID vaccine. We lucked out. All of our interns are fully vaccinated. Our contingency plan was to first have our business liaison talk with the family about vaccines and refer them to talk with their doctors or other resources. If they still didn't want to get vaccinated offer to send them to another Project Search site in our city that does not require the COVID vaccine. |

Pharmacy Internships - Inpatient / Outpatient
Adam Johnson
|
We are meeting with leaders at our hospital site in a few weeks to discuss the possibility of having interns work in the pharmacy. Our hospital is a large 1,100 bed hospital in west Michigan. We have both an inpatient and outpatient pharmacy. The latter is run by Meijer (large midwest grocery chain), so I'm not sure what barriers there would be there because it's a different company.
Any help with task ideas or anything else that we should know is greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |
