Ideas in lieu of Graduation?

Our graduation isn't until August so we haven't discussed any alternate options. I would suggest a small gift bag with a certificate. If the interns live close enough a small car parade with co-worker, mentors, skills trainer(s) and/or instructors. Someone can take a picture of the intern with their certificate. The interns can be told ahead time to dress up a little and have family on the porch with them.

This is just a combination of suggestions I've seen while browsing the web.

Wishing you all the best!

COVID-19-Ways to Engage Interns

Great job! Before we were asked to leave our host site, our interns did daily bell ringers that included "this day in history facts" (http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/this-day-in-history.html). I usually found something interesting and related it to job training/life skills. I can't believe I didn't think to continue this through distance learning. Awesome idea smile

Good Morning! Today is the 108th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. I found this youtube video that describes the different jobs were available on the Titanic as crew members. The interns are sending me an email describing which of the jobs they would want and why- we will then be comparing ideas in a google meet tomorrow.
Just thought it was a fun history activity that still relates to employment.

Interns and Masks

I have come across multiple websites and videos that have given advice as to slowly introduce the concept of wearing masks to the interns. Definitely stressing the importance of wearing a mask, just as an intern would wear gloves if working in a cafeteria setting. The mask will be a new item added to their Project SEARCH uniform. There are sites selling masks with a clear area around the mouth and face shields which are also great options. However the key concept across all platforms is the discussion of what makes the mask uncomfortable and addressing that issue. Hope this helps!!

I am wondering if anyone has come across ideas on how to handle sensory issues with interns and masks? As we talk to our host business, there will be an understandable zero tolerance issue and before boot camp, I want to try to come up with a comprehensive plan. Thanks!

Elevator speech

Hi Melissa,

The "elevator speech" should actually flow naturally in the conversation, so I wouldn't think having a prepared "speech" is the goal. As long as the basic facts are stated, it should be fine. I usually describe Project SEARCH as a transition to work program for individuals with disabilities that provides them an opportunity to gain equal employment. If the person has questions it's good to have information to provide, but usually people are just curious.
