Hi everyone,

We are having a hard time with the interns staying motivation during the work day and coming up with motivators that can be translated to a job. What do other PS sites do when it comes to motivation? What incentives or rewards do you use at your site?

Thank you
Autumn

We work with verbizing praising the interns and upon returning to the group the interns are given to share highlights of their day or any concerns. We instill in them to offer each other support whether verbal praise or strategies. In addition we also allow the interns to bring snacks to the class setting as long as everyone is meeting their work job responsibilities. This also seems to help and on occasion I will give out something tasty to those who respond to questions and I see throughout the day doing an awesome job. I tend to make a real big deal and my coworkers do as well. It some times looks like we are quite excited when praising them. They seem to really like the recognition.

Has anyone used any kind of token reward system where their interns earn points that they can redeem for prizes/things they want for rewards.

Small rewards can go a long way in boosting intern motivation.
Here are some ideas:
Tangible Rewards:
  • Company Swag: Branded merchandise like t-shirts, mugs, or tech accessories.
  • Food and Snacks: A catered lunch, snacks, or a gift card to a local food delivery service.
Intangible Rewards:
  • Public Recognition: A shout-out in a team meeting or company-wide email.
  • Personalized Feedback: A handwritten note or a one-on-one meeting to discuss their progress and potential.
Experiential Rewards:
  • Team-Building Activities: Organizing team-building events like escape rooms, cooking classes, or volunteer work.
  • Shadowing Opportunities: Allowing them to shadow other employees in different departments.

Remember, the best rewards are those that are meaningful and personalized. By taking the time to understand your interns' interests and motivations, you can choose rewards that will inspire them.
