Hello all,

We have a brand new site at ThedaCare Appleton. We have 7 interns, 1 instructor and 1 skills trainer. I am looking for some resources on a staggered start. Also to help the interns get the most out of this experience, there will be times that interns will have to be independent in the classroom, while the skills trainer and instructor are out supporting interns in their departments.

Looking for resources for a staggered start schedule and independent meaningful work for intern to do in the classroom.

I have already reached out to the volunteer program and they didn't have anything for us to do. I have also reached out to different nursing homes, with no luck.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we are closing in on our start to internships! Thank you and hope everyone is doing well!

Hello and congrats on your new site. Our site has 9 interns and we are based at the Children Hospital of San Antonio. We have 1 instructor, 1 job coach and 1 skill trainer.

Currently our interns meet with me in the am from 8:30 am till about 9:40am, they then leave to their departments within the Hospital independently in various departments. from 9-2:25 pm. They return to the classroom at we work on various employability skills and soft skills. 2:30pm till 3:30pm.

We start our interns start off with following basics of employment:
*orientation (Project SEARCH) expectation, procedures and program policy and expectations for remote if this happens.
*hospital orientation (similar to hat employees go through hippa, Security, blood born pathogens, work ethics. Employee expectations harassment training, code of ethic, emergency codes etc)
*COVID protocols and proper PPE
*We role play with the interns as well as watch them implement strategies taught.
* Cover soft skills teaching them what they are and role play situations.
* We use the time to also assess writing skills, reading and following directions (from one step to multiple) doing various activities.
* Communications body language and perceptions are hit right away. (Soft skills will need to be redone over and over throughout the year especially when transitioning to a new rotation, attending events.
* Employability skills are covered and interns are assessed and surveyed for what interest they have, skills they have or interested in, or experience they have.

Sorry I have to go but I’ll login later to add more

I have tons of sites

Good morning,
We have a new site at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay. We have 7 interns, 1 instructor, and 1 skills trainer. We ae looking for ideas on the staggered start of internships when one person needs to stay in the classroom with the other interns. Do you give each intern only half a shift with skills trainer before you start the next one?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

Great questions. Staggered starts are a great way to get interns gradually out into the business. With two staff members, one will have to be in the classroom and the other one out in the internships. You can start the interns gradually with a couple of hours or half a day in the internship with one staff member and then they can come back to the classroom for the rest of the day while another intern goes out in the afternoon. Hopefully in the the next day, those interns can go out for a little while independently while a staff member gets another intern oriented and trained on basics in the department for half a day and then another for the other half of the day. If there are any specific tasks they need to practice repetitively, they can use materials in the classroom to practice. A good example is checking out dates or expiration dates. Another would be reading par lists. I have attached an example of a staggered start plan for 2 staff and 6 interns. You can see the initials of the staff members who were assigned to the different tasks. There is also a spreadsheet from the UK in the toolkit section. Just search "staggered" and it will come up.
