Welcome New Teams!

Hi there,
My name is Lisa and I'm teaching a brand new Project SEARCH in Oakville, Ontario. I'm super excited....... I have an idea of what I'd like the first couple days to look like but I'd love to hear from others on what activities you use as ice breakers to help the students feel welcome and comfortable before you get into the orientation activities. |

Multiple site internships

Looking to hear from programs who have internships at more than one host site.
We have our classroom at a hospital called Oakville and we have always had all internships here but recently a sister hospital down the road approximately 30 minutes has a couple internship opportunities. W're trying to figure out how to logistically have interns at another location when the other 90% of interns are at a different location, plus the teacher and two skills trainers are at this main Oakville location. Look ing for tips, suggestions and any advice. Thank you! Lisa |

Interns at 2 different sites

Hello, I'm looking to hear from any programs that have interns at 2 sites. Our host site is Halton Healthcare - under this umbrella there are three hospitals all within 30 minutes of each other. Our classroom and internships are at the main Oakville site however one of the hospitals down the road approx. 30 minutes has two internship opportunities. I'm looking to hear from anyone who has tried this. Thank you. Lisa |

Online learning resources

Last spring when we were sent home to do virtual learning, we had all our interns complete the Food Handling Certificate. My school board paid for the registration fees and we supported interns through synchronous google meets in smaller groups of 2 or 3 to help them learn the material. I worked with the Food Handling company to create an accommodation such that an adult could sit beside the intern when they wrote the quiz to help read all the questions and multiple choice answers. It was a huge success-- we have all but one student pass (he actually chose not to participate). We now have two interns hired in Food Services here at the Hospital and the Food Handling Certificate is one of the requirements. |

Interns at 2 different sites

Hi there, We decided against travelling 30 minutes away. We're going to keep all our interns under one roof especially during all the covid restrictions. Thanks for your feedback -much appreciated.
We have interns currently at 3 sites, however, all are within the same healthcare system and are no more than 4 miles from one another. We have one working in occupational health and another at the hospital print shop. We are taking turns observing and meeting their needs at the offsite location.
In your case with it being 30 minutes away, I'd be concerned with travel time lost. I would try to set a schedule where everyone alternates days and travel so that there is a more comprehensive view of the intern and their progress/ needs.
I see you posted this in November, what did you guys decide to do? How are you handling it?? |

Interns hosting their own internship feedback meet
Lisa Prentice

Hello, I'm trying to locate curriculum on coaching interns through hosting their own internship feedback meetings. We are approaching the 2nd meeting of the 2nd internship and I'd like to prepare a lesson and do some roleplaying around interns hosting their meeting. I thought I recalled seeing curriculum in self-advocacy but when I click on the link, it comes up as an error. Any help is appreciated. Thank you! Lisa |

Staggering the 1st internship
Lisa Prentice
|
Hello, I'm looking for ideas on how best to stagger the interns when they begin to head out into their first internships. I recall seeing something like a spreadsheet on the website but can't seem to locate it. We have 10 interns each year and it seems to take close to 3 weeks or more to get everyone placed.... I'm thinking there has to be a better way. Thank you! Lisa in Oakville Ontario |

Thank you so much for your feedback - it helps to know that other programs take a few weeks as well. And we were also going to try the 1/2 day and it sounds like we will need to choose the interns carefully if we give that a try. Thanks!!!!!

Hi Lisa,
It has always taken us several weeks to stagger them out. If you have several areas with strong natural supports where the workplace takes on training, you can shave a little time off. But in Winnipeg we often try to give our interns 2-3 days of 1:1 support to ensure they have their start up and end of day routines in place, and enough tasks that can be completed independently with accuracy to keep them busy while we shift on to other students.
This year we had some do half days to begin so they rolled out a little faster, but it really depended on the placement to make it work. One of the interns was quite thrown when we shifted to whole days, so I don't know if we will do that again or not. |

If anyone has one of those vertical (tall, thin) promotional banners that they bring to events with them, can you please share a picture of what it looks like and/or share where you found a project search logo to use. thank you. Lisa |

We have gotten our banners right from the Project SEARCH website marketplace twice in the past. Probably would be your best bet. They are horizontal though, but work just as good across the front of tables or behind them on a wall. Here is a link:

Hello
In the past, I have ordered the tabletop banners from 4Imprint and Crestline. I was pleased with both companies' productions. Unfortunately, I could not locate a photo to provide an example. One thing to consider with the design is the use of photos. Most photo releases last for 5 years or less, if you want to use the banner for longer than 5 years there are a couple of things to think about. As for the logo, ALL logo options are in the member portal toolkit Toolkit/Essential Documents/Event Planning And Marketing/Logos |
