COVID-19-Ways to Engage Interns

Hello, my site in NJ has been closed for 3 weeks now. We got word from our school district that we have to provide the students with 4 hours of instruction/independent work. I post a question of the day on Google Classroom at 9:00am. Then from 9:30-10:15 we have video conference in which we review the question of the day, do a general "mental health" check-in, and present the lesson for the day. From 10:15-1:00 the students work on the lesson, log into Conover to work on a module, watch CNN10 and share info about their favorite/most interesting news story, and then complete one more independent activity. The students also check in with their Skills Trainers and our Job Developer during that time.

All in all, we are in a good routine. I just want to make sure the work I am providing my students is meaningful and not just a time filler. I appreciate all of the ideas and suggestions being shared.

We are holding our EPMs through Google Meet. It hasn't felt much different than it did when we were all in person.

Pharmacy Internships

I just met with the pharmacy department at Overlook Medical Center in NJ. They would love the opportunity to work with us to host a student, but the list of tasks on the Internship Examples: Hospital document are outdated. They said most of the department is electronic and highly regulated. There are many opportunities for an intern to work while avoiding medication. Any ideas?

Hospital Internships for Interns in wheelchairs

A few years ago we had a student in a wheelchair who interned with Patient Services. She greeted patients/visitors and helped them find their way around the hospital. She also was responsible for delivering and picking up mail to various departments. We put an organizer on top of the tray on her motorized wheelchair. It worked well.

We have had students intern in Central Sterile. They were responsible for:
  • Collect deliveries of medical supply items from receiving, unpack packages and check the integrity of items.
  • Put medical supplies away and rotate supplies by expiration dates.
  • Files inventory and order related documentation.
  • Porter supplies onto various hospital floors as needed.
  • Return empty cardboard boxes to the receiving area for breakdown and recycling.

Suggestions to help an intern focus.

We have a very similar situation. We have tried setting alarms on his watch with "Keep Working" as a reminder. Not totally effective but definitely redirects him. I am interested in what others suggest.

We use PowerSchool to input attendance. When a student has had issues with being tardy or absent we have had a team meeting to discuss and support. I think a policy would be beneficial.

Setting Boundaries

Hi- We have a student interning in the hospital's safety and security department. His dream is to work in law enforcement and is incredibly excited about this learning opportunity. Unfortunately, he is struggling with respecting boundaries and will stop by the department on his off hours, use the walkie talkie for non-emergencies and has worn his uniform home vs. leaving it in the office. We are happy that he is so determined, but also need to set some limits. Does anyone have suggestions and/or a sample behavior contract we can see? Thanks in advance!

At this point, my skills trainers visit their interns in their departments but don’t stay very long unless they are learning something new. It’s more of a checkin.
